Brownsville, the county seat of Edmonson
County, is a small community located
at the western edge of the internationally renowned Mammoth Cave
National Park. Brownsville, with an estimated 1998 population of 952,
is located22 miles northeast of Bowling Green,
Kentucky; 86 miles northeast of Nashville, Tennessee;
96 miles southwest of Louisville, Kentucky; and 281 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri.
Edmonson County,
with a land area of 302 miles, is located in south-central Kentucky, partly within the Western Coal
Field Region and partly within the Mississippian Plateaus Region. Nearly
47,000 acres of Mammoth Cave lies beneath Edmonson County.
Edmonson County, designated as a "Scenic
Byways" area by the Department of Transportation, offers over 80 miles
of scenic roads. Edmonson
County had an estimated
1998 population of 11,353 persons.
